June 15

Mighty Aphrodite

“Mighty Aphrodite” may just be the best feminine jazz band in decades to hit the entertainment circuit. Composed of seven young women from British Columbia and the three westernmost U.S. states, the group has been a smash hit at many jazz festivals since being formed some five years ago. The June 15th date will be its second appearance at a monthly concert of the Puget Sound Traditional Jazz Society.

Leader, trumpeter and vocalist is Bria Skonberg, who has made jazz critics do away with the expression: “she sure plays great--for a girl." They agree -- she holds her own with all .the top horn men playing in the classic jazz style. She’s joined on the “front line” by Claire McKenna, clarinet, and Emily Asher, trombone, both veterans of the genre despite their young age. Joining the band for a special guest appearance is Portlander and nationally famed vocalist-guitarist Rebecca Kilgore. The rhythm section is a strong one, featuring Georgia Korba, bass; Shannon Thue, piano; and Beth Goodfellow, drums.

Well-rehearsed enough to skip arranged charts, Mighty Aphrodite has an amazing stock of early classic (Trad) jazz in its “book” as well as mainstream standards and pre-World War Two swing. The combination of exciting improvised solos and tight ensemble playing have been a revelation to audiences previously unaware of the band’s existence.
