September 19

Bob Schulz' Frisco Jazz Band

We are a traditional jazz society -- right ?

And as we resume our monthly concerts, we observe what has become a tradition. That is, our music will be provided by the outstanding combo which has graced our stage for lo, these many Septembers -- Bob Schulz' Frisco Jazz Band.

The "Frisco" refers to the band's STYLE of jazz, basically derived from the music popularized by guys like Lu Watters, Bob Scobey, Turk Murphy in the 1940s -- a revival of the New Orleans origins of jazz that came to pass in the San Francisco Bay Area.

In actuality, the Schulz group as presently constituted is brought together from a number of geographical regions, but its sound output hews close to that of those musicians who recorded for the "Good Time Jazz" label and others decades ago. Only Bob (cornet, vocals) and Scott Anthony (banjo, guitar, vocals) still reside in the Bay Area.

Pianist Ray Skjelbred lived in Oakland for years but now calls Lake Forest Park his home. Chris Tyle, the drummer for our September 19th date, has returned to his original Portland-area home after exhibiting his multi-instrumental talent in New Orleans for several years.

Three veteran midwest jazzmen who have played for our club with Schulz and other groups in past seasons fill out the septet with their special individual abilities. They are Kim Cusack (clarinet); Tom Bartlett (trombone); and Mike Walbridge (tuba) --- all known across the land for their standout festival and recording sessions.

This septet needs no music charts. The guys KNOW the music inside out and still are full of surprises with their improvised solo shots. Don't miss this once-a-year opportunity to hear one of the nation's top classic jazz band.
